"The Unfair Advantage" SEO book is an excellent guide to search engine optimization or SEO. If you're looking for an easy to read SEO book to get you up and running quickly this is highly recommended.

There are a lot of crappy "SEO Secrets Revealed" type books in the market. Unfortunately many are low quality jobs quickly knocked together to cash in on the phenomenal growth in search marketing. In contrast The Unfair Advantage has real pedigree. It's in its 9'th year of publication and has repeatedly won the Pandia Award for "Best publication on search engine marketing".

In case you think that means it's now out-dated - it's not.

One of the biggest challenges in search engine marketing is keeping up to date - it's a fast moving target and continually changing. To accommodate this the book is published in electronic format and updated every month. This is important because what was common "wisdom" one month a go, may well be hazardous today.

The Unfair Advantage, published by Planet Ocean, is written by search engine promotion experts who work on search engine optimization on a daily basis. The book is based on their research and their experience. The information given is never more than one month old, which is important given the dynamic nature of search engines.

The book covers all the core techniques of search engine promotion. It contains separate chapters on titles and keywords, meta tags, how to analyze the pages of competitors, doorway pages, SEO software, the use of scripts and CGI and more.

The book also shows you various spamming or cheating techniques that can result in search engines banning your site. You need to be aware of these techniques and are warned against using them.

One of the most useful parts of the book are the in-depth details about each of the major search engines and directories, including history, the latest developments and information on how they handle meta tags, alt text, keywords and so on.

The book costs US$97, which may initially seem a bit steep. However it does represent very good value because, apart from the book, you get 6 months of free updates, access the Planet Ocean archive and most importantly a bonus six month subscription to Search Engine News.

Search Engine News is a monthly publication which Pandia Search Central describe as "probably the best newsletter on search engine promotion in the world".

Whilst the book is very good we think the real value is getting Search Engine News every month. This is always a good read and provides in an easily digestible format the latest knowledge necessary to beat your competition in the search engines.

Summary: Highly recommended. Probably the best recommendation is that we, like many other search engine marketers, subscribe to it.
