Australian Search Engines

LookSmart Australia is a directory whose results in the past have been widely used by other Australian search engines & portals. Getting listings in LookSmart Australia has been a good way to get wide exposure to a large segment of the Internet savvy Australian population.

LookSmart claimed to reach up to 80% of Australian Internet users. This has changed dramatically inline with the global demise of LookSmart.

In late Jan 2004 LookSmart Australia was acquired by Sensis Pty Ltd, the directories business of Telstra. By mid March LookSmart's market reach of Australian Internet users had dropped from 80% to 52.5%.

LookListings, LookSmart's paid placement product, has been dropped by Yahoo Australia & NZ in favour of its own Overture PPC sponsored listings.

In addition LookSmart is
no longer accepting new SmartListings submissions. In the past SmartListings have been a great way to get visibility in nineMSN, Australia's biggest portal. With MSN dropping LookSmart on a global basis existing SmartListing contracts are being allowed to run their course but not renewed.

Below are details about LookListings & SmartListings in case you're interested. However at this stage spending money on LookSmart is probably not the smartest move for most website owners.

LookListings

  • This is the paid placement product and based on a pay per click (PPC) fee model. The cost per click is negotiated on a case-by-case basis. (If you're not sure what PPC is, click here for PPC information).
  • It is a product more suited to larger online marketers prepared to pay for top positions.
  • LookListings ensure placement in the top search results across the entire LookSmart Network.
  • This includes the top 3 "sponsored sites" on NineMSN. Click here to see an example for a search for the phrase New Zealand car rental on ninemsn - the first 3 results are "sponsored sites", i.e. LookListings. Then the results from position 4 down are called "Web Directory" results and these include SmartListings.
  • LookSmart claim LookListings provide a reach of up to 80% of the Australian Internet audience.

SmartListings - new bookings no longer accepted

  • This is the paid inclusion product (previously called LookListings Small Business).
  • SmartListings appear in the LookSmart directory results from position 4 onwards and give a claimed reach of up to 65% of the Australian Internet audience. The main reason for buying SmartListings is to get into nineMSN search results.
  • The cost is affordable for small-medium businesses. A flat rate fee of A$400 + GST per annum applies per URL, with up to 3 URLs per site allowed.
  • With paid inclusion you are paying a fee to ensure your site is included in LookSmart directory results, rather than paying for a position which is what LookListings provides (see below).
  • Being a directory, submitted listings are subject to editorial approval.
